CIEL - create the future GreenInnovationInCities-EEP-programme-A4-print (1).pdf

CIEL – Copenhagen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab, was launched in 2011 with the funding of the EU Social Foundation and the Capital City Regional Foundation. The purpose of CIEL is to encourage and enhance innovation and entrepreneurship education and research across disciplinary boundaries.

In specific collaboration between Copenhagen Business School (CBS), University of Copenhagen (KU) and Danish Technical University (DTU) is fostered by CIEL.

One of the foremost activities initiated and managed by CIEL at CBS is the Green Innovation in Cities educational program. It consists of eight elective courses at Master level and two summer schools all within the themes of Urban Greening, Urban Flows and Green Energy. Most of the courses and summer schools include cross-disciplinary team work with CBS, KU and DTU team members in each group. The projects that the teams work on are proposed by private-public partners.

For example, one assignment might be proposed by a manufacturer of pumps and deal with the challenge of storm water flooding in big cities, where KU students might view the challenge from an organic perspective, while DTU students take a more mechanical hydraulic stance to the problem at hand. CBS students are able to make financial models and present the trade-offs between the different solutions.

Part of the Green Innovation in Cities program is the Beijing-Copenhagen Urban Challenge (BCUC), where Danish and Chinese students spend three weeks in each Copenhagen and Beijing. The program will address the challenges of urban development, urban green energy, sustainable urban living, and other themes related to Green Innovation in Cities in Copenhagen and Beijing. Private-public partners are invited to collaborate with teachers and students and present the BCUC with the real-life challenge that innovative businesses face in China.

BCUC is a platform from which students from the three large universities in the Copenhagen region can broaden their horizon, and businesses can give direction and content to higher education. The BCUC program is launched in September 2013.
